A poor, lonely old man got a priceless axe but used it only for firewood, nearly wearing it out. Merchant John recognized it and wanted to buy. The old man refused, saying he depended on it. John offered a hundred bolts of silk; the old man ignored, thinking it a joke. John then asked about two hundred or five hundred bolts. The old man cried, regretting the axe's reduction from one and a half feet to five inches while now being worth five hundred bolts. John said he'd give a thousand bolts, and they closed the deal. The axe was a treasure; anything under it burned with firewood became valuable.
