The Life of the Buddha 07

Starting from the age of twelve, the prince began to practice martial arts. He was extraordinarily strong in the arm and quickly mastered all kinds of military formations and weapons. King Suddhodana hoped that the prince would become a monarch with both civil and military abilities, because at that time, various kingdoms in India were vying for supremacy, and the Kingdom of Kapilavastu was often threatened by the two powerful kingdoms of Kosala and Magadha.

Once, King Suddhodana held a martial arts contest. The prince's cousin Devadatta and younger brother Nanda each shot an arrow through three drums. When it was the prince's turn, finding the bow too weak, he took the ancestral fine bow and shot an arrow through seven iron drums. The audience cheered and King Suddhodana was extremely proud.
