When the prince was seventeen years old, King Suddhodana chose the beautiful Yasodhara as his consort, hoping that it would turn the prince's sorrow into joy.

Princess Yasodhara was of peerless beauty. King Suddhodana believed that women, fine wine, and music could bind the prince's heart that yearned for transcendence.

However, although the prince had a wife, he thought that such happiness could not bring long - lasting contentment in life, and his heart remained empty and lonely.
