The Life of the Buddha 26 At dusk, the Crown Prince saw the various ascetic practices of the ascetics. Realizing they only brought physical pain and couldn't lead to the truth, he decided to leave. Many ascetics earnestly tried to persuade him to stay, showing their joy at his arrival and reluctance at his departure. Yet, for the sake of pursuing the true path of enlightenment and eradicating the root of suffering, the Crown Prince explained his reasons for leaving, citing the differences in their sought-after states and cultivation methods. Finally, an ascetic advised the Crown Prince to seek the recluse Ārāḍa Kālāma on Mount Pandava. Grateful and pleased, the Crown Prince spent a night in the ascetic forest and bade farewell to the ascetics one by one the next day.
