The Life of the Buddha 27 Channa led the white horse and walked towards the city of Kapilavastu with heavy steps. The white horse hung its head and neighed mournfully, having lost all of its former vigor. With tears streaming down his face, Channa murmured, "I walked out of the city with the Crown Prince last night, but now I'm the only one returning today." In the city, the springs seemed to have dried up, the flowers and fruits had withered, and the faces of the common people were filled with sorrow, as if they were in a desolate and silent world. The crowd surrounded Channa and questioned him about the whereabouts of the Crown Prince. With tears in his eyes, he replied, "The Crown Prince has already shaved his head and become a monk, and he has entered the forest of ascetic practices... He has abandoned his royal crown and also all of us."
