Buddhist Story: The Roots of the Tree. One person asked Sakyamuni Buddha, "Why is it necessary to vow to save all sentient beings in order to become a Buddha?" The Buddha replied, "Let's take a tree as an example. Sentient beings are the roots of the tree; bodhisattvas are the flowers; and Buddhas are the fruits. To bear flowers and fruits, one must diligently nourish the roots of the tree, cherish and care for them. Otherwise, if the roots are damaged, the tree will wither, and how can it bear flowers and fruits?" Words of Wisdom: We are all one interconnected whole. If everyone only thinks of themselves, society will become selfish and self-centered. Therefore, starting from ourselves, we should cherish others as we cherish ourselves.
