Buddhist Story: The Courtier Who Carried the Stool.
Once upon a time, there was a king. He wanted to take a rest and have some fun in the park, so he ordered one of his courtiers:
"Go and bring a stool here so that I can sit on it when I take a rest."
This courtier thought that carrying a stool was something beneath his dignity, so he said to the king:
"Your Majesty, I can't carry it, but I can carry it on my back."
Upon hearing this, the king had thirty-six stools brought and placed them all on the courtier's back, asking him to carry them all the way to the park.
Words of Wisdom: The courtier was so concerned about his dignity over carrying one stool that he had to carry thirty-six stools on his back. In life, do we sometimes try to outdo others only to pay a higher price? It's worth pondering.
