The Life of the Buddha 01 Near snow-capped mountains with lush forests was Kapilavastu. King Suddhodana was able and respected. He ruled well, bringing peace and prosperity, and was loved by his subjects. Young and successful, he married Maya, and they got along well. But over time, they had no children, which saddened them. Maya advised him to take concubines, but Suddhodana refused, saying it was useless if fated not to have an heir. His worry grew despite his words.
