Buddhist Story: Boiling Sand to Make Rice. A man, starving with hunger, went to the river and filled a pot with sand to cook. He desperately added more fire, hoping to turn the sand into rice as soon as possible. But when he opened the pot lid, all he saw was a pile of hot sand; there was no trace of white rice. He said in confusion, "I did everything according to the method of cooking rice. Why can't I cook rice?" A monk passing by told him, "Everything in the world has a cause and effect relationship. Although you followed the method of cooking rice, sand is not rice. Only rice can be cooked into rice. How can boiling sand make rice?" Words of Wisdom: People often only see the result but do not understand the cause. So even if they follow all the steps, they still gain nothing.
