The Life of the Buddha 13 Seeing that the prince was sad, King Suddhodana persuaded him to go on an outing outside the city again and arranged an even more magnificent procession of carriages and horses. Not far after the prince left the city, he saw a dying patient. Filled with compassion, he asked Channa the reason. After Channa's explanation, the prince realized that the suffering of illness in life was inevitable, yet all living beings still chased after illusory pleasures. Deeply pained, he ordered Channa to return to the city. When King Suddhodana learned that the prince was sad because of seeing the old man and the patient, he added more beautiful women and music in the palace after returning, but to no avail.
