The Life of the Buddha 14 King Suddhodana went out of the city in person to inspect. He choosed a garden for the prince, arranged more attendants and maids, and persuaded the prince to go on an outing. The prince, not having the heart to go against his father's wishes, went on an outing again. On the way, he saw some people carrying a coffin and learned that there was a dead person inside. Channa explained that death meant the destruction of the body's functions and that no relatives could substitute for the deceased. Deeply feeling the misery of death and realizing that death was inevitable, the prince thought that people in the world should not lead an indulgent life. So he ordered Channa to return to the city. However, Channa, having received the king's order, dared not return early. Eventually, the carriage arrived at the garden.
