The Life of the Buddha 19
After the prince returned to the city, he made a request to his father, King Suddhodana, that he wanted to renounce the world. King Suddhodana was extremely shocked and tried his best to dissuade the prince. He hoped that the prince would inherit the throne and then consider renouncing the world when he was old. The prince proposed that if his four wishes - no aging, no illness, no death, and all things remaining intact and unchanging - could be fulfilled, he would consider not leaving home to become a monk. Naturally, King Suddhodana could not guarantee these. After that, King Suddhodana resorted to various means to keep the prince. He added more palace maids and musical instruments, assigned people to guard day and night, and asked the ministers to persuade the prince. However, the prince increasingly felt that the royal palace was like a birdcage, binding him.
