The Life of the Buddha 12 After the prince left the city, he saw a frail old man by the roadside. Feeling horrified and curious, he asked Channa, the charioteer, "Look at that old man. His hair is white, his back is hunched, his eyes are dim, and his body is trembling. He has to walk with a cane. Why is he like this? Did he become like this just now, or has his fate been like this since birth?" Channa truthfully told the prince about the process and inevitability of aging. The prince sighed, realizing that everyone is equal in the face of aging. The truth of impermanence shocked him like a thunderbolt. He felt that life was empty and miserable, so he ordered Channa to turn the carriage around and return to the city.
