Buddhist Story: The Immortal Protects the Bird.

In ancient times, there was an immortal who practiced his cultivation in a remote mountain. He often meditated quietly under a large tree, banishing all distracting thoughts and cultivating his mind through Zen meditation. It was winter, and the weather was bitterly cold. As dusk approached, a starving and chilled little bird flew in and perched in the immortal's embrace, hoping to find some warmth to sustain its life. Fearing that he might frighten the bird, the immortal sat cross-legged in meditation, not daring to move a muscle, allowing the bird to rest peacefully and fearlessly in his arms. Only when the bird flew away to another resting spot the next day did the immortal emerge from his meditation. Such was the depth of his compassionate heart for protecting and caring for animals.
