Buddhist Story: Ghosts Fear the Fierce. Five monks were on a journey. Caught in a heavy snowstorm, they sought refuge in a roadside temple. Inside were wooden idols of ghosts and gods. Four monks planned to burn the idols for warmth and food. One monk objected, "No way! These are enshrined by people. How can we burn them?" And he protected the idols. At midnight, the ghosts in the temple overheard their talk. The ghosts conferred, "Among these five, we can only devour the one who fears burning the idols, as he alone is scared of us." The protecting monk overheard. Swiftly, he tossed the idols into the fire. The ghosts fled in terror. Words of Wisdom: Don't cling to outward forms or rites. Seek the significance within.
