The Life of the Buddha 04 After King Suddhodana settled the queen and the prince, a guard reported that an immortal sought an audience. The king invited him in and asked politely. The immortal said in meditation, he heard from celestial beings that the prince would become a monk and be the future Buddha, able to teach great Dharma and truth, so he came to pay respects. The king had the prince brought out. The immortal looked at the prince with reverence. The prince had the marks of a Buddha with no flaws. The immortal wept and sighed. The king asked why. The immortal said he was old and feared missing the prince's enlightenment, so he was sad. Hearing the prince would become a monk, the king was sad about no heir. The immortal affirmed it. Then he left. Though sad, the king respected the prince more, pardoned prisoners, rewarded people, and the nation celebrated the prince's birth.
