The Life of the Buddha 11 Although there was constant joy in the royal city, the prince grew weary of the hustle and bustle. In his heart, he often thought of the suffering sentient beings. Just like a bound elephant still yearning for the wilderness, he asked his father, the king, for permission to go on an outing outside the city. King Suddhodana made elaborate preparations, clearing away the scenes on the streets that might displease the prince. He also arranged for ministers and attendants to observe the prince's expressions. The prince then set out of the city by carriage, and the people lined the streets, cheering for him.
