The Life of the Buddha 24

After the prince saw Channa leading the white horse back to the city, he entered the ascetic forest of the Brahmin Bhrigu without any worries. Many ascetic sages in the ascetic forest, upon seeing the prince's extraordinary appearance, all paid their respects to him. The prince asked an elder how to achieve true enlightenment and liberation. The elder gave a detailed introduction to various kinds of austerities carried out for the purpose of being reborn in the celestial realm, including the living environment, the way of eating, and all sorts of special ascetic practices. They firmly believed that by practicing these austerities, they would be able to obtain peace and happiness in the near future.
